Transforming a Challenging Site into a Resort-Style Retreat
This award-winning project began with a steep, wooded property that required careful design to make it both usable and beautiful. Our solution was to create a series of connected spaces across multiple levels, each with its own purpose, while maintaining a natural flow throughout the landscape.
At the heart of the design is a 25’ x 45’ swimming pool with an integrated spa — a striking centerpiece that brings a resort feel to the backyard. A shallow tanning ledge with bubbling jets adds a playful touch, while the spa spills seamlessly into the pool for the ultimate relaxation zone.
Spaces for Connection and Comfort
To make the property truly versatile, we designed two distinct fire features: a sleek, modern gas firepit and a more traditional wood-burning firepit. Together, they create inviting spots for gatherings at any time of year.
The elevated deck was rebuilt to include a dry, covered lounge beneath it — complete with lighting, fans, and space for a wall-mounted TV. This transformed what is often wasted space under a deck into a poolside retreat and entertainment hub.
For dining and entertaining, we added a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, refrigerator, and serving space. It’s the perfect place to host summer parties or enjoy casual family meals outdoors.
A Landscape Brought to Life
Soft landscaping plays a key role in balancing the strong architectural elements. Flowering perennials, shrubs, and seasonal trees, such as crape myrtles, were carefully chosen to bring color, texture, and year-round interest. Subtle LED lighting was integrated throughout to highlight features and extend enjoyment of the space long after sunset.

The judges praised the project’s creative use of grade changes to define different levels, as well as the inviting transition between the firepit and surrounding trees. They also noted the success of making a difficult under-deck area not only functional, but welcoming.
